As the world of scholarly publishing, open access and compliance has changed, Swansea University Libraries has created a Research Support Team that is now growing to more effectively support our research staff across the University.

The post holder will play a full and active role as a member of the Library Research Support Team. Based in the library they will work pro-actively with Research Engagement and Innovation Services, Research Hubs in Colleges and IT Services to develop and maintain robust workflows and infrastructure, to support research data management and record keeping and comply with institutional and external funding agency’s requirements.

Day-to-day activities will include maintaining and updating the University’s central data asset catalogue, and working with researchers and administration to ensure that data underpinning research, and associated requests to access such data, is correctly described, recorded and where necessary published across a variety of systems. The post holder will be required to exercise initiative and responsibility in this area of work, and will acquire specialist knowledge.

The post holder will provide a lead within the Research Support Team in developing innovative services to meet the changing needs of researchers, administration and students across the University in relation to the management and publishing of data underpinning research. Such services would include research data management training, proof reading relevant sections of grant applications for research funding to provide feedback and where appropriate create and update knowledge base articles, how-to guides and other information sources.

  1. Work within the Research Support Team to improve researcher engagement and compliance with RCUK and other funder's requirements regarding the recording and publishing of underpinning data, including contributing to the development of institutional policies and strategies in these areas;
  2. Provide regular reports, and statistics to the Library, University management and external funders on University research data asset holdings, highlighting areas where development may be required and identifying risks;
  3. Will be the primary contact and coordinator for institutional Research Data Management;
  4. Provide expertise and guidance to the research community, university staff and students regarding the publishing of research data; to be undertaken by appointment, telephone, helpdesk, online and email communication; including reviewing research data management elements of research funding applications to ensure compliance with internal and external requirements;
  5. Devise and deliver group and one-to-one training sessions on research data management and related themes to staff, researchers and students as required;
  6. Develop advocacy and communication materials for our services and resources of relevance to staff, researchers and students, both in printed and online form via the University’s online platforms;
  7. Work in collaboration with colleagues in IT Services, Libraries, Professional Services, and the Academic Community to develop technical solutions that support the transfer, cataloguing and publication of research data;
  8. Ensure our technical solutions are compliant with institutional and external funder’s requirements, data protection legislation and are compatible with the University’s Research Information System (RIS) and Cronfa, the Institutional Repository;
  9. Work in collaboration with colleagues in IT Services, Libraries, Professional Services, and the Academic Community to develop innovative and sector leading solutions that support repurposing, visualization and increased research funding to further research projects based on University research data assets;
  10. Actively provide advice and guidance to staff on the best routes to creating persistent identifiers relating to publishing research data;
  11. Maintain and develop services and procedures as technology and practices mature and change, ensuring that legal and other regulatory bodies’ requirements are satisfied;
  12. Develop and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including academics, researchers,  University Professional Services, the Research Engagement and Innovation Service (REIS), external funders, publishers, bodies such as JISC, and with other HE institutions developing Research Data Management and Planning best practice;
  13. Work in collaboration with others to provide support for the Institutional Repository to maximise uptake and exploitation. This includes adding and amending digital content, metadata and publication data where necessary within the Research Information System (RIS);
  14. Identifying issues and providing monitoring and compliance reports in relation to the University's Open Access Repository, Cronfa and Open Research activities.
  15. Maintain an up-to-date professional knowledge of developments in Open Research publishing, to provide advice and recommendations to develop and improve services;
  16. Participate in staff training and continuous professional development activities as required;
  17. Perform other duties which will be consistent with the role. This will include participation in special projects and working groups
