From 1st March 2018 the Netherlands Coalition for Digital Preservation (NCDD) and the Digital Heritage Network in the Netherlands will join forces, in order to increase the social value of cultural heritage offered by digital technology.

Focus on digital preservation

Since 2008, the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision, the National Library of the Netherlands, the National Archives, Data Archiving and Networked Services (DANS) and the Cultural Coalition for Digital Preservation have collaborated with many other heritage institutions as members of the Netherlands Coalition for Digital Preservation (NCDD). Their goal has always been to share cross-sector knowledge and facilities that maintain access to digital collections in the Netherlands. The NCDD partners have achieved much in this area.

Since 2015, the NCDD has participated in the Dutch Digital Heritage Network, a national, cross-sector collaboration of heritage institutions focusing on the visibility, usability and sustainability of digital heritage. As part of the Network, the NCDD carries out projects under the Sustainable Digital Heritage work package as well as promoting knowledge sharing and networking.

A single national platform

Two years of close collaboration with a shared mission and vision have led to the logical decision by the Boards of the NCDD and the Digital Heritage Network to continue as one organisation. From 1 March 2018, all digital preservation activities in the Netherlands will be concentrated in the Digital Heritage Network. This will create a single national collaboration platform for all institutions and lend more strength to their activities.

Joining forces: user-focused

During the 10 years of its existence, the NCDD has yielded useful results and generated a valuable, growing community of people and organisations. All the expertise, facilities and collaborations developed in the context of the NCDD will be carefully secured and continued in the Digital Heritage Network. In doing so, the NCDD will also leverage the scale of the Digital Heritage Network, to the ultimate benefit of digital heritage consumers in the Netherlands.

Collaborative platform

On 1 March, a new website will be launched: www.netwerkdigitaalerfgoed.nl (link not live yet). This will be the new home for all the expertise, facilities, news and activities previously found on the NCDD website, as well as additional information on other Digital Heritage Network themes. The main language is Dutch, but in the coming weeks work will take place to publish the main information in English as well.

About the NCDD: The Netherlands Coalition for Digital Preservation (NCDD) was founded in 2008 by a group of public organisations whose primary tasks include management of digital data collections. The Coalition’s aim is to collaboratively create a cross-sector organisational and technological infrastructure guaranteeing long-term preservation of digital files.

About the Digital Heritage Network: More and more collections from archives, libraries, media, museums and knowledge institutions are being made available online in digital formats. Within the framework of the Digital Heritage Network, the heritage sector is jointly developing a system of nationwide facilities and services for improving the visibility, usability and sustainability of digital heritage materials in the Netherlands.
